Silver Grapple Review

Grade: B

An impossible platformer where you try to escape with just a jump and grapple

Silver Grapple is one of the most impossibly tricky platformers I’ve ever attempted. It crossed a threshold into becoming frustrating for me, making it different from Celeste, Ori, or the other 2D platformers I’ve played and enjoyed.

The story in the game is relatively simple. You are in an underground science lab, and a terrible accident has locked the entire crew underground. As you swing around on your grapple, you can unlock teleporters, which allows the team to follow you. No one else has the grappling skills, so the character is at the vanguard of the escape.

Momentum based gameplay

As you fall, you gain lots of momentum. With Silver Grapple, you need to transfer that falling energy into movement around tight corners and across the map. I think for people that enjoy this game, something clicks where they “figure it out.” Unfortunately, that never happened to me. Aiming the grapple while flying through the air and timing it at the perfect time wasn’t something that clicked. I gave it a reasonable effort but didn’t get all that far in a silver grapple.

Momentum-based platforming is about as challenging as human reflexes are capable of performing.

For those that are up for a uniquely tricky game, Silver Grapple would be good to pick up. It’s not for the faint of heart, though.
