WaveCrash Review

Grade: C+

Puzzle Brawler with matching-based combat

Wavecrash is a challenging game to explain, so I’ll include the tutorial below. You are on a puzzle board, and if you have three or more matching colors, you can send them as a wave against your opponent. But, of course, your opponent does the same. The point of the game is to make “waves” of matches that then “crash” into your opponent. Each time you hit the opponent, you make their playing area smaller. If you hit them enough times and reduce their playing area small enough, you KO the opponent and win the game.

Wavecrash Tutorial

Gameplay starts simple but is

Wavecrash has a vibe sort of like tennis + Tetris + street fighter. The vibe also reminded me of the world of the FP a bit as well. Like in “Beat Beat revelation,” you quickly get into a death spiral after taking your first hit.

Wavecrash has some fun gameplay, but the AI doesn’t have much talent. I beat the AI, and there’s no campaign or online multiplayer. So if you want to play Wavecrash longer than 5 minutes, you’ve got to wrassle up other live humans for an actual match.
