Stophat Review

Grade: C

A little arcade game trying to put a hat on monopoly man’s head.

Stophat is a short game that takes about 3 minutes to learn and 20 minutes to beat. I was happy to get through the game on my third try and was ready to put it down by the 2nd.

You play as a tophat, and you are trying to put yourself back on the head of the monopoly man. The scenery includes a lot of gold for some reason, and the updrafts are wicked. The wind attempts to blow the hat away, ending the game if you don’t fight the updraft successfully.

On the last level, it gets quite difficult. The ceilings and walls have broken away, and you have to keep the hat on-screen in the midst of flurrying wind. All this while attempting to place the on the man’s head.

Wind currents in the last level get crazy.

Whenever you strike the monopoly man’s head, he says things like “what the f#$&?” or “top of the morning” and “jolly good” in a super fake British accent.

Impressively, Stophat was made over 48 hours at a game jam by the author, Problematicar. It’s a strange game and is a decent 20-minute distraction, but otherwise not noteworthy.
