Lasercat Review

Grade: B+

Quirky 2D platformer sprinkled with trivia

I was drawn to Lasercat because it reminded me of the SNL digital short skits in the 2000s with Andy Samberg. For those skits, they had some famous directors make the most trash/poorly produced thing possible, and then the ongoing bit was watching Lorne Michaels hate on “Laser Cats.” So it was a pretty fantastic series.

I almost quit this game in about the first 5 minutes because this particular Lasercat couldn’t shoot lasers, which bummed me out. However, the cat was pixelated and cute, the intro was wacky and silly, and I ended up sticking it out and got some excellent enjoyment out of this game.

Enough about Laser Cats, what about Lasercat!

The goal in this 2d pixel platformer is to collect 30 odd keys around the maze and free your owl friend who was seized by the evil frog “Wizzard.” Each room was specially named, and you had a bunch of warp/save points. The warp/save points kept the backtracking to a minimum.

Example of the platforming needed to grab keys.

Every time you got a key, you had to answer some random trivia question. If the answer is wrong, you get thrown into lava and start back at last save.

So much Silliness

Little jokes are embedded everywhere in Lasercat. I would encourage the player to read every sign, talk to every ghost lasercat, and fully explore the world. It’d be a good game to throw at kids. The platforming was average challenge level and was not anything too easy or too hard. It took me about an hour to explore the whole map and beat the boss, Wizzard.

The final battle against Wizzard

I swore I heard one song in the mix before, and it drove me nuts. Thankfully, in the end, I learned that they took music from the glorious open-source library of Kevin Macleod, which is used all over the place. So no wonder I had heard it before because I had.

Lasercats was an enjoyable and relaxing mid-afternoon activity. It would have been an “A” if the cat actually could shoot lasers. I will end the review with my favorite room in all of the Wizzards dungeon.
