Space Madness Review

Grade: C+

Oddball humor and a unique alternate universe, but the puzzles were not my preference, and the game crashed on me right before the end.

“Space Madness” is a silly game where you walk around like a giant cheese block and Spongebob-looking one-eyed mutant who solves point-and-click puzzles in a strange world.

The playthrough was only a couple of hours, and it was relatively enjoyable. The world was unique and had some weird sci-fi alternate universe characters reminiscent of Rick and Morty.

I recognize that this is a personal preference, but I am not a fan of the puzzles in point-and-click games where you have to combine items to make other items. Then, you use the combined items to solve puzzles. It feels arbitrary when it’s unclear what goes with what, and you have to click through all the permutations of objects on the screen to see where they can combine. Since this was such a big part of the game, it took away a lot of enjoyment. I ended up using a walkthrough to save myself the frustration.

Space Madness has a unique cast of strange mutant characters.

Item combination challenges aside, the game was going along well, and the oddball humor kept me interested. In the final act, though, I was about to confront the big bad when the game crashed. There is no auto-save feature in Space Madness. I, unfortunately, had not thought to save manually, and I lost all of my progress. I put the game down at that point.

Space Madness has some bright spots, and the alternate universe is memorable. The game is somewhat unstable in my personal experience, and the puzzles were more frustrating than engaging.
