Devtheism Review

Grade: B

Short top-down RPG with existential questions

In this short and sweet top-down RPG that’s just 30 minutes long, there’s a cultural schism between people in this gameworld who believe that “Developers” are the creators and those that believe the world is “Procedurally Generated”. People in the world fight constantly over which one is right. Are all our actions pre-determined and programmed, or is it just the initial conditions created, and nothing past the world’s creation has been pre-determined?

Protogatanist’s journey

Our protagonist believes that his world is created by Developers and goes on a quest to find proof of the Dev’s existence to shut up the naysayers. He gets to a far-off island and finds the original “credits tablet,” which, when you click it, has the game credits to the game come up, proving the developers’ existence. However, he realizes that this “proof” doesn’t prove anything. It’s more important to respect and understand others than to prove yourself right. Game over.

My only beef with the game was that the English were ungrammatical throughout many places. But, overall, I liked the tolerance message of the game, and it was a clever take on the genre.
