Grade: B
When you wake a sleeping bear and he gets angry.
Bazookrash is a short first-person shooter arcade game. The bear protagonist (unsure whether they are villain or hero) wakes up from a nice slumber to sirens ringing across the city. Naturally, the solution is to grab his rail gun, his bazooka, and his rifle and start blowing up the noisy troublemakers that are contributing to his insomnia. If you hit the blue cars, though, that aren’t making the siren noise, then you can get knocked out of the game.
Combo of classical music and destruction
This game has one of my favorite combinations: classical music and Destruction/Mayhem. It reminded me of one of my favorite movie scenes in Boondock Saint. In the scene, Willem Dafoe, a forensic analyst, recreates and conducts a firefight with some haunting choral melodies epically resonating in the background.
In Bazookrash, Maurice Ravel’s Bolero playing in the background, and as the difficulty rises, so too does the music intensity. Towards the end of Bolero, you’re shooting as fast as you can to keep up with the siren intensity.
The cars seem to be swimming in the water and have fins on their backs. This is never explained or commented on but struck me as a strange little quirk I should point out!
Overall Impression
Bazookrash was a pretty one-note game, but it made that one note well. The sound, animation, and controls were all well-implemented. It’s a great game for 10-15 minutes of distraction when you need a break from something else.
