Throw Cubes into Brick Towers to Collapse Them Review

Grade: B-

A sandbox game of destroying block towers in new and creative ways.

“Throw Cubes into Brick Towers to Collapse Them” is a pretty simple venture for a player. The title of the game describes the experience more eloquently than this review will.

Sandbox Controls

You have several options in this sandbox. First, you decide what you want your tower to look like. Will you choose a traditional brick tower with an open center, a fully filled-in tower, a building with struts, or a single wall? How high and wide and tall will my tower be?

Second, you can decide how you want to destroy your tower. Will it be bricks or dynamite? How strong do I want my destruction force to be? Do I want a huge boom or a tiny nudge?

Then, you can throw bricks or dynamite at the tower and watch the destruction happen all around you.

Satisfying physics and graphics

Graphically, this view of blocks flying all over the map when you throw things at it is a mesmerizing spectacle. I built huge towers, tiny towers, easily destructible towers, and strong towers in the sandbox, and then I played around with dynamite strength and brick sizes/weight and camera angles. Overall, there’s a surprising amount to do in the sandbox. It’s a perfect game for releasing some fidgety energy.

You will need a good graphics card to run this game, though. If you set your block tower to be too large, it will slow the game to a crawl and almost freeze your computer. I had to CTRL-ALT-DELETE the game a few times when I was overambitious in the build.

Also, a setting changed where the UI became unreachable, and I had to dig around the windows registry to fix it. Kudos to the developer for including that issue in their GitHub FAQ, though. I would never have figured it out otherwise.

All in all, there’s not a lot to this game, and most of what needs to be said are in the name of the game itself. If you are looking for a distraction or something for a quick 10 minutes, that’s about the right playtime amount for “Throw Cubes into Brick Towers to Collapse Them.”
